Walking is one of the most convenient exercises you can do to boost your mood, improve your heart health, lose weight, and generally live longer. Fitness tracking devices often recommend we take 10,000 steps a day, and while that may sound daunting, here are some simple ways to get more steps in your day.

Are you finding it difficult to get time in to get your steps in? If you’re like me, getting the number of daily steps can be a challenge, but there are ways around it that can work for you.

Yet it’s true: Completing an extra 10,000 steps each day typically burns about 2,000 to 3,500 extra calories each week.

Add Distance

Park your car farther away from your destination. Get off a stop early if you’re using public transit. Walk to the corner store instead of driving. Add another loop when you’re walking your dog in the evening.  If you’re looking for more motivation, check out 6 Ways to Stay Motivated to Walk Every Day.

Meet a friend for a walk instead of for coffee. Walk on the treadmill while catching up on your favorite show. Pace around the room while chatting on the phone. Shop in person instead of ordering online.

Take a Break

Get up and walk around every hour for at least 1 minute. Spend the first half of your lunch break going for a brisk walk. Climb your stairs during commercial breaks at home.

Make a Change

Pick up a more active hobby like hiking. Swap your Sunday pancake tradition with a morning stroll in the park. Skip the elevator and make stairs your new default.
