It’s summertime, baby! And we know that when the temperature rises, everyone goes back inside for the cool air-conditioning. Let’s admit it: Family time can be hard to come by, but it’s well worth pushing your busy schedules aside to make some new memories. Scroll down as we talk about 10 healthy outdoor activities for you and the entire family!
Don’t let summer be a drag. There are plenty of fun-filled activities to keep the whole family busy and healthy at the same time. When kids are out of school and looking for things to do, you have an opportunity to lead by example and show your family that living an active, healthy lifestyle is essential.
Here are ten healthy outdoor activities you can try today!
Take a walk and observe the world around you. All you need to start is a nature journal and a writing utensil. The possibilities are endless, and each written observation helps us connect with the world around us.
Host a Picnic
Grab a lunch and take your meal out to the playground where your children can run around before chowing down. Include options from each food group, such as fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, and yogurt. Your kids will thank you for it!
Plant a Garden
Enlist your kids to help grow a garden in the backyard. Summer is an excellent time to grow vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, peppers, and snap beans. Not only will your child be inspired to eat the food that they are growing, but the act of gardening itself can help develop motor skills and build strength.
Family Bike Ride
Even if your little one hasn’t mastered a bike yet, there are plenty of other options. My little one used a scooter and a balance bike before graduating on to more considerable outdoor activities.
Is the day outside too hot? Go for a swim and cool down. If you’re looking to do some aerobic activity, check out ‘Pool Exercises for a Cool Water Workout.’
Backyard Obstacle Course
Don’t fret! It’s a lot easier than it sounds. You can create a backyard obstacle course with hula hoops, jump ropes, sticks, stones, and hoses! The fun is watching your children use their imagination to be active.
Hold a Car Wash
Park your car in the driveway and let your child give it a good scrub with a pot of soapy water and a garden hose. Maybe initiate a weekly wash where neighbors can take advantage as well. Either way, your kiddos will love it. And perhaps they can earn a little extra spending money?
You don’t have to look for a state park to go camping.
Instead, you can create a campground in your backyard! Spend the night under the stars and make quality time with your kids.
Visit a Farmer’s Market
The best way kids learn healthy habits is by watching your healthy habits. Load up on fresh produce and teach your kids well by letting them tag along. When you get home, you can then make healthy snacks together.

Make Sidewalk Art
Let’s get creative! Give your kids a big bucket of sidewalk chalk and let them go to town. You may give them some ideas with printed photos or even stencils to color.
