5 Family Fitness Activities You Can Do at Home


Is the coronavirus quarantine making you and your family live like hermits?  It doesn’t have to be that way.  In fact, there are many fun activities to participate in as a family that will help you get off the couch and burn some calories together.  That’s why I’d like to introduce 5 family fitness activities you can do at home.

It’s time for some exercise!  There are many simple activities that will set the stage for active living with you and your family.  These family fitness activities below are inexpensive, fun, and habit forming.

Online Exercise Videos

There is definitely no shortage of workout videos on the market, so you can have your pick of the lot. Kids and parents alike can have fun mirroring the instructor’s moves in the comfort of their own home, without having to buy a gym membership or pay a per-class fee. Move the coffee table and use your living room entertainment center as a workout room for an hour every day. It’s as simple as that.

Pick-A-Stick Activity Jar

Are you looking for a craft project AND creative ways to provide some mix and match exercise activities? Credit to Healthy365 blog for this fantastic idea.  First, have the kids help paint groups of sticks in different colors. Once dry, use markers to label each stick with a separate activity. After they’re done, stick them in a cup or jar and let the kids pick where the day’s adventure will lead.  Think of four categories: mix-and-match individual exercises (i.e. jumping jacks or walking lunges), physical indoor games, workout routines, and destination active adventures (have a “get out of the house” back up for those extremely stir crazy moments). The color-coding lets you guide your kids to the right grouping for the kind of activity and time frame you are looking to fill.

Have a Dance Party

Who doesn’t like a good dance party?  Plus, this is a great way for the little one’s to burn off some energy. To turn it into a game and brush up on some listening skills, try a “freeze dance”. The rules are simple: dance when the music plays and when the designated DJ stops the music, everyone freezes.

Utilize Interactive Electronic Games

Many parents have used the Wii Fit or Xbox Kinect as a means to get their kids off the couch while still playing their favorite video games.  What’s more fun than staying inside and challenging each other to an electronic hula hoop contest or “ski jump” for the best high score?  Your kids will thank you, but you’ll also break a sweat.

Go for a Walk

Just because we are living under a quarantine doesn’t mean you can’t leave the house.  Make walking a daily family activity.  If possible, use the family dog as a motivator for walking more.  Find the nearest walking trail or path because there are so many great benefits to walking.  If you’d like to read more about the benefits of walking, click this link.
