5 Unhealthiest McDonald’s Menu Items to Avoid

Fast food restaurants are typically stereotyped for being calorie-dense diet crashers, but some are worse than others.  Way worse. And when we think of fast-food, the epitome generally is McDonald’s. Here’s a list of the five unhealthiest McDonald’s menu items to absolutely avoid.

McDonald’s has become one of the largest corporations in the world of fast-food chains with more than 35,000 restaurants worldwide. My five-year-old daughter is a big fan, and I’m sure that McDonald’s is a quick meal choice for many families because it’s fast, easy, and delicious. Yet if your goal is to eat healthily, let’s focus on menu items that you will want to avoid.

Big Breakfast with Hotcakes

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but consider this the most dangerous 1,340 calorie mistake of your morning.

The Big Breakfast includes a flaky biscuit, a stack of hotcakes and syrup, a coveted hashbrown, scrambled eggs, and a sausage patty. It also contains 64 grams of fat (25 grams of saturated fat), 155 grams of carbs, and 2,090 milligrams of sodium.

Double-Quarter Pounder with Cheese

At 740 calories per burger, consider this a diet crasher. What’s worse is that this burger contains 2,360 milligrams of sodium, nearly close to 100% of your daily maximum recommended intake.

If you were to add fries and a regular soda, the whole meal would come out to 1,270 calories.

Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich

You’d think that a chicken sandwich would be a healthy option, but this meal has 620 calories, 29 grams of fat, 1,030 milligrams of sodium, and 63 grams of carbs.

Worse, the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich has more fat than three slices of Domino’s cheese pizza and more sugar than a Krispy Kreme donut.

Southwest Salad with Buttermilk Crispy Chicken

There’s that inclusion of buttermilk chicken, again! When you add Doritos as a flavor-topping and full-fat ranch dressing, this salad comes out to 520 calories, 25 grams of fat, and over 1,000 grams of sodium.

While it’s not the WORST thing on the menu, people seeking a healthy menu option need to check their expectations at the door. For improvements, ask for grilled chicken and a low-fat vinaigrette dressing.

Large Fries

McDonald’s fries have to be the most favorite item on their menu. After all, they are world-famous and delightful. But, as you know, most food that tastes that delicious is unlikely to be wholesome.

A large order of fries is 510 calories and 24 grams of fat. It’s not terrible until you realize that people order french fries as a SIDE item. If you want to do a deep dive on McDonald’s french fries, read this fascinating article by Mashed. You might reconsider that addition of fries after you read about the cooking process.
